General questions

How often should I see the dentist for a check-up and cleaning?

Most children and adults should see their dentist and hygienist for a regular cleaning and check-up every 12 months. Tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene are some of the many factors that your dentist takes into consideration when deciding how often you need your dental cleaning and check-up. People at a greater risk of oral diseases should have dental checkups more often.

What precautions do you take to ensure patient safety?

We protect our patients in many ways, starting with state-of-the-art sterilisation equipment and the use of face masks and gloves. We always check our patients’ health history.

Is it important to replace missing teeth?

A confident smile and a healthy mouth are important assets but it is important to replace missing teeth for health reasons as well. Once teeth have gone it results in bone loss. This not only shortens your face and ages it, but can cause other teeth to become loose which are then at risk of falling out. Your features droop and generally appear distorted. Missing teeth also provide fertile breeding ground for tooth decay. If you have one missing tooth the surrounding teeth become increasingly susceptible to decay, which can result in them being lost as well.

Is my treatment going to hurt?

We can provide anaesthetics for any treatment that is likely to hurt you. The injection can be uncomfortable but will only take a few seconds. For children, we use a topical anaesthetic on the skin in the mouth which dulls the pin prick feeling of the needle.

At what age should I start taking my child to see the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children first see a dentist as early as six months of age and no later than one year of age. During this time, your child’s baby teeth will be coming in and your dentist can examine the health of your child’s first few teeth. After the first visit, be sure to schedule regular checkups every six months.

How safe are dental X-rays?

Exposure to all sources of radiation including the sun, minerals in the soil, appliances in your home, and dental x-rays can damage the body’s tissues and cells and lead to the development of cancer. Fortunately, the dose of radiation you are exposed to during the taking of X-rays is extremely small.Advances in dentistry over the years have led to the low radiation levels emitted by dental X-rays. Some of the improvements are new digital X-ray machines that limit the radiation beam to the small area being X-rayed, modern higher speed X-ray films require shorter exposure time compared with older film speeds to get the same results, and the use of film Advances in dentistry over the years have led to the low radiation levels emitted by dental X-rays. Some of the improvements are new digital X-ray machines that limit the radiation beam to the small area being X-rayed, modern higher speed X-ray films require shorter exposure time compared with older film speeds to get the same results, and the use of film holders that keep the film in place in the mouth (which prevents the film from slipping and the need for repeat X-rays and additional radiation exposure).

Which is the best toothpaste to use?

Any toothpaste containing fluoride that you like the flavour of is fine. Fluoride is important because it helps to strengthen tooth enamel, inhibiting tooth decay.

Do I need to use a mouthwash?

It′s up to you whether you choose to use a mouth rinse or not. However it is important to remember that it should not be used instead of a toothbrush, as it won′t clean your teeth for you. Apart from giving you a pleasant taste for a few minutes, most mouthwashes offer no benefits and in fact many are highly acidic, which could gradually erode your tooth enamel.

Is an electric toothbrush more effective than a manual one?

It′s possible to clean your teeth just as well with a manual toothbrush as an electric one. If you choose to use an electric toothbrush, you should still spend four to five minutes each time. It doesn’t clean any quicker – it’s just doing the movement for you. Those who have limited strength or movement in their hands or arms may find it easier to use an electric toothbrush.

Teeth straightening

How often should I wear my Invisalign or Smilealign aligners?

While Invisalign and Smilealign aligners are removable, you should wear them for around 20 to 22 hours a day. You should remove them only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing. Wearing your clear aligners consistently and as directed by your Floss and Smile dentist will help you achieve optimal results within the estimated treatment time that we’ll discuss with you during your initial patient journey here in Dunstable.

Will Invisalign or Smilealign aligners affect my speech?

It may take a little while to get used to wearing your clear aligners, so wearing them may affect your speech initially. However, most patients adapt quickly, and any speech impediments typically diminish as your mouth adjusts to the aligners. And because the clear aligners have been custom-made they are super-comfortable, even while they’re gently moving your teeth!

Can Invisalign or Smilealign aligners treat all types of orthodontic issues?

Invisalign and Smilealign are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues, including overcrowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Your dentist here in Dunstable will assess your specific case to determine if clear aligners are suitable for you, during your initial consultation.

Are there any dietary restrictions with Invisalign or Smilealign aligners?

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign and Smilealign aligners are removable, allowing you to eat and drink most foods without restrictions. They are designed to fit in with your lifestyle, making clear aligners a popular teeth straightening option for our patients in Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and Ashridge. However, it's recommended to remove your aligners when enjoying hot drinks and acidic or sugary foods to prevent damage and maintain good oral hygiene.

How do I maintain my oral hygiene with Invisalign or Smilealign aligners?

Good oral hygiene is crucial during treatment with Invisalign or Smilealign aligners and being able to remove your aligners makes the job of cleaning your teeth easier than with brackets and wires. As well as your twice daily brushing routine and regular flossing, you should brush your teeth after meals before reinserting your aligners to prevent plaque buildup. Cleaning your aligners regularly with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water will also help maintain your dental health.

Dental hygiene

How often should I visit a dental hygienist?

At Floss and Smile we generally recommend visiting our dental hygienist every six months for a routine cleaning and check-up. However, depending on your oral health needs, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits.

Does a dental hygiene appointment hurt?

Our dental hygienist is highly skilled and experienced in treating patients gently. You might feel some pressure or mild discomfort during the cleaning, especially if there’s significant plaque buildup or if your gums are sensitive. Your hygienist will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the process.

Can a dental hygienist help with bad breath?

Yes, our dental hygienist can help identify the cause of bad breath and provide effective treatments. Often, bad breath is caused by plaque buildup, gum disease, or other oral health issues. Regular cleaning and proper oral hygiene can significantly reduce bad breath and improve your overall oral health.

Can a dental hygienist detect oral cancer?

Our dental hygienist is trained to spot early signs and symptoms of mouth cancer during a routine examination. If they notice any suspicious areas or changes in your mouth, they will refer you to a dentist or specialist for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, so regular visits to your dental hygienist play a vital role in maintaining your overall oral health.

Dental veneers

Are dental veneers permanent?

Dental veneers are considered a permanent cosmetic dental treatment because a small amount of enamel needs to be removed from the tooth surface to accommodate the veneer. This irreversible process ensures a strong bond and proper fit of the veneer. While veneers are durable and long-lasting, they may need to be replaced eventually due to normal wear and tear over time, or if they become damaged.

How long do dental veneers last?

Your dental veneers should be in place for many years if you look after them well. They can break and become chipped just like natural teeth and you will need to take care when playing sports or eating hard foods.

Why can’t I just whiten my teeth instead?

In some cases, professional teeth whitening can brighten your smile and revive your appearance. When you have gaps, permanent stains, or chips, bleaching your teeth won’t help. Porcelain veneers literally cover the teeth and create a straight, attractive smile.

Can anyone get dental veneers?

While many people can benefit from dental veneers, not everyone is a suitable candidate. Patients should have healthy teeth and gums, as well as enough enamel on the teeth to support the veneers. Patients with severe tooth decay, gum disease, or inadequate enamel may require treatment to address these issues before getting veneers. Your consultation with your Floss and Smile dentist will determine if veneers are the right choice based on your oral health and cosmetic goals.

Composite bonding

Is composite bonding painful?

The composite bonding procedure is generally painless. Local anaesthetic may be used if necessary, but many patients find the process comfortable without it.

How long does composite bonding last?

With proper care, composite bonding can last several years. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices can help extend the lifespan of the bonding.

Can composite bonding be removed or repaired?

Yes, composite bonding can be easily removed or repaired by a dental professional if necessary. It can be adjusted or replaced if it becomes damaged or discoloured over time.

Will my bonded teeth look natural?

Yes! Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin that can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural appearance.

How should I care for my bonded teeth?

Caring for bonded teeth is similar to caring for natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and avoid biting hard objects. Regular dental check-ups are also recommended to ensure the longevity of the bonding.

Is composite bonding a good alternative to other dental treatments?

Yes, composite bonding is a cost-effective and less invasive alternative to treatments like veneers and crowns. It provides a quick solution for improving the appearance of your teeth while preserving more of the natural tooth structure.

Teeth whitening

How much does teeth whitening cost at Floss and Smile?

The cost is £350 and includes clinical photos, four large syringes of whitening gel, anti sensitivity paste and bespoke whitening trays. Two review appointments are also included in the price.

How long will my teeth whitening last?

The whitening effect can last from six months to several years, after which it becomes slightly discoloured, yet still whiter than before you whiten your teeth. This varies from person to person. The whitening should normally be touched up within 12 to 18 months for one to two nights/days to maintain your bright smile.

Is professional teeth whitening safe?

Yes, professional teeth whitening performed by a dentist or dental professional is considered safe when done according to recommended guidelines. The treatments we use at Floss and Smile use controlled amounts of bleaching agents to minimise risks of sensitivity or damage to your teeth and gums.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have dental restorations like crowns or veneers?

Teeth whitening primarily affects natural tooth enamel and may not change the colour of dental restorations. If you have visible restorations, your dentist can discuss options to ensure consistent colouration with your natural teeth, such as replacing or adjusting restorations after whitening.

Dental crowns

Why might I need a dental crown?

You might need a dental crown if you have a weak tooth that needs protection from breaking, a cracked or worn-down tooth, a tooth with a large filling and not much tooth remaining, a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment, or a discoloured or misshapen tooth for cosmetic reasons.

How should I care for my dental crown after the procedure?

After getting a dental crown, proper care is essential to maintain its longevity. Good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing twice a day and flossing daily, are important to prevent decay around the crown and gum disease. It's advisable to avoid hard foods, as chewing hard foods, ice, or using your teeth as tools can damage the crown. Regular dental visits to Floss and Smile are crucial to monitor the crown and surrounding teeth.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns can last between 5 to 15 years or longer, depending on the material used and how well they are cared for. Good oral hygiene practices and avoiding habits like teeth grinding and biting fingernails can extend the lifespan of a dental crown. Regular dental check-ups with us here in Dunstable will also help ensure the crown remains in good condition.

I have a loose denture. Can dental implants help me?

Yes they can. Dental implants are an excellent solution for the millions of people who have loose dentures and offer many advantages over conventional dentures. Conventional dentures are often uncomfortable and, due to the movement, limit a person’s ability to speak and eat normally. Because of this, many people feel self-conscious wearing their dentures. The dentures can be secured into place by locking on to 2-4 implants.Implants are commonly used to replace individual missing teeth, but they can also be used to secure or stabilise loose dentures in either the upper or lower jaws. Instead of having a crown (cap) fitted to the top of the implant a precision-made attachment is fitted which inserts into the underneath surface of the denture, securing the denture to the implant. In the lower jaw this can be achieved with as few as two implants. If there is sufficient bone available and you are willing to have more implants inserted then you can often be fitted with a completely solid set of teeth attached to the dental implants (a full-arch bridge). This set of teeth would stay in permanently and would look and feel very similar to a natural set of teeth.

Is dental implant placement painful?

Dental implants are typically placed under local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment. If you are very nervous or suffer from dental phobia we can offer you sedation. Our whole team has trained extensively in caring for nervous patients, and over the years, we've successfully treated many people with high levels of anxiety. We've not only transformed their smiles and improved their oral health but also significantly reduced their dental treatment-related anxiety.

How long does it take to place dental implants?

Your dental implants may be placed in as little as 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the location and the number of implants being placed. Your dentist will be able to give you a clear idea of the treatment time during your first appointment with us.

When will I receive my new teeth?

Treatment time varies for each patient. Typically, you will have some type of temporary teeth until your implants bond to the bone. We can provide a time estimate based on your treatment needs, during your initial consultation here in Dunstable.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Home care for your implants consists of brushing and flossing. Regular dental visits are required for long term health and success.

How long can dental implants last?

Implants can last many years if cared for properly. Many implants have been in place for more than 40 years.

How does the long term value of dental implants compare to other options?

Dental implants are low maintenance and provide stability and confidence in your smile. Therefore, the long term value of dental implants far exceeds conventional treatment options.

Are dental implants safe?

Yes, dental implants are considered a safe and effective treatment option for replacing missing teeth. At Floss and Smile, our dentists have a special interest in dental implant surgery and have restored hundreds of smiles over the years, using gold standard implants.

How long does it take to get dental implants?

The journey to receiving dental implants varies based on personal factors like oral health, potential need for procedures such as bone grafting, and the body's healing response. Typically, from the first consultation to achieving a complete restoration, the process spans several months. This period allows for the implant to fuse securely with the jawbone (known as osseointegration), a critical phase lasting approximately 3 to 6 months.

You’ll be able to schedule your next appointment. You can read more about our New Patient Journey and what to expect here.
