A welcoming practice

For nervous patients

Our whole team has trained extensively in caring for nervous patients, and over the years, we've successfully treated many people with high levels of anxiety. We've not only transformed their smiles and improved their oral health but also significantly reduced their dental treatment-related anxiety.

Lauren Allcroft
“As someone who was very anxious going to the dentist and avoided them for years I can not recommend floss and smile enough. Dr Invir has changed my whole view on dentists. He makes you feel relaxed and talks you through everything he is doing. Both hygienists I have had have been very friendly and the reception and nurses are always lovely. Amazing practice.”
We will take

Gentle care of you

There are very few people who feel completely relaxed when visiting the dentist. Some people may feel a little anxious, some may be frightened while others may be so afraid that they visit the dentist only when the pain in their teeth is severe.

Fear of dentistry can turn into a vicious cycle as people avoid attending for routine check-ups, therefore, allowing dental problems to develop until the point when they are in desperate pain. We will help you to get good routines to avoid filling and drilling.

All of our dentists are used to meeting nervous patients and will do everything they can to assist.

Relaxation

Before your appointment

  • We create a calm and relaxing environment
  • We have a team of lovely people who care about you!
  • You will never feel rushed
  • We will always wait for the anaesthetic to start working 100% before starting the treatment
  • We let you be in control during treatment. You are always given ways to let us know if you need a break to rinse or want us to stop for any reason including just taking a break! We are used to this and do not make you feel uncomfortable if you did stop us midway through treatment.

Ways we help you relax

  • You have the music of your choice in the background - we have even had ZZ Top playing during fillings and extractions! We normally have very calming and relaxing background music, but the choice is entirely yours.
  • We have a TV mounted on the ceiling for you to watch with headphones during your treatment. We find that this reduces anxiety immensely! You get something else to concentrate on and you don’t hear the drill.
  • We have relaxation techniques, including breathing exercises to help you calm yourself before and during your treatment.
Creating a

Calm environment

  • We have sedation options should you require them
  • We take time to understand the root cause of your anxiety
  • We gradually build a bond of trust between our team and you
  • We will give you the opportunity to get to know our team
  • You are reassured that our training and skills can deliver your treatment to an exceptional level - pain-free and unrushed
  • Whatever the treatment, we ensure that it is delivered in a way that our patients are comfortable

Frequently asked questions about

Floss and Smile for our nervous patients

What will happen during my first visit as a new patient?

Unless you have an emergency, your first visit to us will be a breeze! You’ll be greeted into our practice and given some forms to complete. Check-in will conclude with one of our dental assistants escorting you to an examination room where we’ll go over your dental and medical history. X-rays and digital images are taken of your mouth. After that, you’ll meet your new dentist, and the two of you will have a discussion about your oral health. Your dentist will look at your X-rays and discuss any concerns they might have based on them. After that, your dentist will build a treatment strategy based on your history and exam. You’ll be able to schedule your next appointment. You can read more about our New Patient Journey and what to expect here.

How often should I see a dentist?

Most children and adults should see their dentist and hygienist for a regular cleaning and check-up every 12 months. Tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, and poor oral hygiene are some of the many factors that your dentist takes into consideration when deciding how often you need your dental cleaning and check-up. People at a greater risk of oral diseases should have dental checkups more often.

What do I do if I have a dental emergency?

Please telephone the practice on 01525 223175 as soon as possible. We will do everything we can to help you. The earlier in the day that you ring, the more likely you are to be seen that same day and at a time that suits you best. If the practice is closed and you cannot wait until opening time, please telephone and listen to the answer phone message which will give you instructions on accessing our out-of-hours emergency service.

What makes you different from other dental practices?

At Floss and Smile we have staff that will make you feel special from the moment you first speak to us over the phone, right through to the end of your course of treatment. You are welcome to discuss any issues that may arise at any time during the treatment. Your satisfaction is of paramount concern to us.

I had a bad dental experience as a child, what is it like now?

Dental techniques have improved so much over the last few years that modern dental treatment can be very comfortable and far different to what you may have experienced as a child. If you have not been to see a dentist for some time, you will probably find that things have improved a lot since your last visit. The general attitude is likely to be more relaxed, the dental techniques and safety procedures will be much better and the equipment more up-to-date.

I’m interested in getting dental implants, what should I do?

I have a loose denture. Can dental implants help me?

Yes they can. Dental implants are an excellent solution for the millions of people who have loose dentures and offer many advantages over conventional dentures. Conventional dentures are often uncomfortable and, due to the movement, limit a person’s ability to speak and eat normally. Because of this, many people feel self-conscious wearing their dentures. The dentures can be secured into place by locking on to 2-4 implants.Implants are commonly used to replace individual missing teeth, but they can also be used to secure or stabilise loose dentures in either the upper or lower jaws. Instead of having a crown (cap) fitted to the top of the implant a precision-made attachment is fitted which inserts into the underneath surface of the denture, securing the denture to the implant. In the lower jaw this can be achieved with as few as two implants. If there is sufficient bone available and you are willing to have more implants inserted then you can often be fitted with a completely solid set of teeth attached to the dental implants (a full-arch bridge). This set of teeth would stay in permanently and would look and feel very similar to a natural set of teeth.

Is dental implant placement painful?

Dental implants are typically placed under local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment. If you are very nervous or suffer from dental phobia we can offer you sedation. Our whole team has trained extensively in caring for nervous patients, and over the years, we've successfully treated many people with high levels of anxiety. We've not only transformed their smiles and improved their oral health but also significantly reduced their dental treatment-related anxiety.

How long does it take to place dental implants?

Your dental implants may be placed in as little as 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the location and the number of implants being placed. Your dentist will be able to give you a clear idea of the treatment time during your first appointment with us.

When will I receive my new teeth?

Treatment time varies for each patient. Typically, you will have some type of temporary teeth until your implants bond to the bone. We can provide a time estimate based on your treatment needs, during your initial consultation here in Dunstable.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Home care for your implants consists of brushing and flossing. Regular dental visits are required for long term health and success.

How long can dental implants last?

Implants can last many years if cared for properly. Many implants have been in place for more than 40 years.

How does the long term value of dental implants compare to other options?

Dental implants are low maintenance and provide stability and confidence in your smile. Therefore, the long term value of dental implants far exceeds conventional treatment options.

Are dental implants safe?

Yes, dental implants are considered a safe and effective treatment option for replacing missing teeth. At Floss and Smile, our dentists have a special interest in dental implant surgery and have restored hundreds of smiles over the years, using gold standard implants.

How long does it take to get dental implants?

The journey to receiving dental implants varies based on personal factors like oral health, potential need for procedures such as bone grafting, and the body's healing response. Typically, from the first consultation to achieving a complete restoration, the process spans several months. This period allows for the implant to fuse securely with the jawbone (known as osseointegration), a critical phase lasting approximately 3 to 6 months.
