Sarah Fleckney
“Floss and smile have been of great help accommodating me with an ongoing tooth problem which resulted in root canal. I’m a fairly nervous patient but these guys make you feel at ease and even have a t.v on the ceiling for you to watch whilst having your treatment done.”

Taking the pain out of your root canal

Our compassionate team in Dunstable is highly skilled in handling even the most challenging cases of root canal treatment. We frequently achieve excellent outcomes for patients who are in pain or wish to preserve their natural tooth, which might otherwise need to be removed.

Opting for root canal treatment means choosing to retain your natural teeth. Without treatment, there's a risk of increased discomfort and the potential for a serious infection.

Our treatments adhere to the highest standards, using the latest techniques and materials available. Our dentists are highly experienced in this procedure and prioritise your comfort, ensuring you feel relaxed throughout, with local anaesthetic applied to the area before the root canal treatment begins.

Signs you may

Need root canal treatment

  • Tooth sensitivity to sweets or hot and cold liquids
  • Constant or intermittent throbbing toothache and pain
  • Pain with biting pressure
  • Tissue swelling of the face

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or suspect you may require root canal treatment, make an appointment with us soon as possible and we can take care of you.

How long does root canal treatment take?

Root canal treatment usually requires more than one visit to Floss and Smile, although sometimes it can be completed in a single visit, depending on the situation. Some teeth have more roots than others, and some teeth have curved root canals that are difficult to find. Plus, teeth with active infections require more than one visit to us.

Teeth have different numbers of canals
  • The top front teeth have one canal
  • The bottom front teeth have one or two canals
  • The premolars have one or two canals
  • The molars have three or four canals
What happens

After root canal treatment?

After your root canal treatment, a temporary filling is placed on the tooth. It's important to replace this with a crown as soon as possible. Teeth can become fragile after root canal treatment, so the crown's role is to strengthen the tooth and prevent it from cracking. If the temporary filling stays in place for too long, there's a risk that bacteria from your mouth could re-infect the tooth.

You may experience some soreness in the tooth for two to three days after the treatment. The severity of your previous infection and inflammation will affect how sensitive the tooth feels afterwards. To aid your mouth's recovery, avoid chewing on the treated side for a short period.

During root canal treatment, the pulp, which is the part of the tooth that responds to temperature, is removed. After the infected pulp is removed, your tooth will no longer be sensitive to hot or cold, allowing you to eat and drink comfortably.
